Creative Futures is an educational program for youth, parents and educators who want to discuss the arts as a viable career option for young people. Each speaker will provide a presentation and related arts activity to teach students about their creative career field.
Featured Guest Speakers: Troy-based illustrator and author Ira Marcks, local graphic designer and Sidekick Creative Founder Will Fowler, along with Media Arts Faculty and Technology Division Chair at SUNY Adirondack Nick Paigo.
1 pm – 2 pm Ira Marcks and Comic Jam Activity – Meet illustrator and author Ira Marcks for a presentation and comic jam, an improv drawing game in which a group of cartoonists collaborate on stories together. The results are funny, unexpected tales of unlikely characters that will level up your creativity!
2 pm – 3 pm Art Nouveau with Will Fowler and Nick Paigo – Meet local graphic design leaders Nick Paigo and Will Fowler for a presentation on tricks of the trade. Their activity is all about composition and design strategy! Choose from a number of rubber stamps and paint colors to create your own Art Nouveau-inspired poster art.
3 pm – 4 pm Design Social – An exhibit of SUNY Adirondack student works will be in view in Rotunda Gallery. A small reception will follow the presentations and art activities.
Ira Marcks, Illustrator and Author
Ira has been teaching visual storytelling for nearly ten years. He has presented his techniques at the National Art Education Convention and shared his experience in a PBS interview from the series A House for Arts. His books include a graphic novel, Witch Knots, an illustrated adventure book, The Aquarium Drift, and a kid’s guide to artistic careers, Creative Every Day. His work is inspired by vintage cartoons, science fiction, poetry, and children’s books.
Will Fowler, Graphic Designer and Illustrator
Will Fowler is a partner and creative director at Sidekick Creative, a graphic design and illustration studio in Glens Falls, New York. Will focuses on branding, illustration, and motion design in his professional pursuits. A graduate of Glens Falls High School, Will studied architecture, art history, illustration, and fine art before discovering the world of graphic design and finding his calling! He lives in his hometown of Glens Falls with his wife.
Nick Paigo, Faculty and Technology Division Chair at SUNY Adirondack
Nick Paigo is an associate professor of graphic arts and lead faculty in SUNY Adirondack’s New Media program, where he has been a faculty member since 2005. Nick received a BFA and an MA from SUNY Oswego in Graphic Design and also studied Education. Before working for SUNY Adirondack, Nick worked at Bryant & Stratton, SUNY Oswego, WSWHE BOCES, and Apple Computer in teaching roles. Along with his teaching role at the college, Nick regularly works throughout the community as a freelance designer.
