Photo-Secession: Painterly Masterworks of Turn-of-the-Century Photography

The exhibition features original masterworks from an international circle of painterly photographers know as the Photo-Secession. In the first years of the 1900s, the artists seceded, or broke away, from the mainstream use of the camera as a tool for mechanical reproduction and embraced a new style that emphasized the role of craftsmanship.

Winter Light: Selections from the Collection of Thomas Clark

A selection of approximately twenty winter landscape paintings from the collection of Thomas Clark will be featured. In the early twentieth century, winter scenes emerged as a major genre for American landscape painters. Major practitioners of the winter landscape aesthetic will include Aldro Thompson Hibbard, Hobart Nichols, Ernest Lawson, Arthur James Emery Powell, Arthur Clifton Goodwin, and Walter Koeniger.

Ansel Adams: Later Works from the Collection of Robert and Jane Lewit

This exhibition features seven gelatin silver photographs by Ansel Adams on loan from the collection of Robert and Jane Lewit. The photographs were printed ca. 1976-1977 from earlier negatives. The exhibit includes Adams's iconic images "Pine Forest in Snow, Yosemite" (ca. 1932), "Sierra Nevada Winter from Owens Valley" (ca. 1944), and "Redwoods, Bull Creek Flat, Northern California" (ca. 1960). These enlarged, high-contrast photographs printed on glossy paper stock exemplify Adams's late printing style.

Includes group transportation, admission, and tour of Yale University Art Gallery, and all tips, with options to visit the Center for British Art, Collection of Musical Instruments, and Peabody Museum of Natural History. Lunch on your own at choice of nearby restaurants, delis, and cafes. Cost and Reservations: $92 Hyde members; $117 all others. Reservations are open to members only until March 20, 2014. All reservations must be received by April 17, 2014.
